When attending conventions with your children, it is your job to learn the ins and outs of the industry, so that you may serve as a support system. Always have pen and paper ready when attending the different seminars offered, which are generally very helpful and informative. If your daughter wants to be a runway model, it is your job to help keep her focused on practicing good runway techniques. If your son wants to be an actor, help him rehearse and study monologues. It is your money invested in their future; you manage the business as they learn their craft. Whatever path they choose, your children are depending on you to help them maintain a focused character in order to succeed in the industry.

In addition to accompanying children to conventions, it is a good practice to go with them to agency and location photo shoots. If your child is scheduled to travel from one city to another, it is your job to a) travel with them or b) have a close friend/relative travel along in your place. By doing so, you demonstrate your support for your children’s activities and help ensure their comfort and security as their career grows.

Model apartments are common in the fashion/print industry. Normally during the summer or later seasons, models will travel from one town to another. The mother agency often partners with another agency out of state that will host model apartments, which include room and board. Normally, there are 2, 3, or sometimes 4 models to an apartment. If this is something that your child will need, it is best for you, the parent, to communicate directly with the agent to understand costs and other fees that may be associated with this.

Alternatively, if you have friends or family in the traveling cities, try to seek out room and board from them first before you accumulate a large tab of expenses. Keep in mind that when your child books a job, the money is recoupable. Modeling agency fees in-state are 20% taken out of every job, while acting fees range from 5-10%. If your child needs an advance, sometimes it is permitted, but there’s an additional percentage fee tacked onto this — normally 5%.

“E” is for Education

THERE’S NOTHING MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR CHILD’S EDUCATION!

Opportunities for modeling will be here until the end of time, but a child’s education is a precious thing. To secure long-term success, encourage your children to pursue their education first as a foundation for a successful life. Do not allow your child to drop out of school for any reason (even a flashy modeling or acting job) – it’s not worth it in the long run. But I totally support single-day shoots, as they can be quite lucrative!

Cold Reading-For Models/Actors

A cold reading is a reading aloud from a script or other text without any rehearsal, practice or study in advance. Being able to perform a cold read or sight-read is essential for both models and actors. The reason why it is also important for models is because most models naturally begin acting after they’ve had success in the fashion business. Here’s the way a cold reading works:

You show up to a casting and meet with the casting director.

The casting director hands you a script.

The casting director can either have you read the scene on the spot or they may give you some time to read the scene immediately prior to your audition (i.e. the waiting room)

It is your job to read over the scene thoroughly, usually one time, and then perform the scene in front of the casting director

You should not try and memorize every part of the scene

Instead, you should get a good feel for what is happening in the scene

When having you to perform a cold read, casting directors are not interested in how well you can memorize your script, they are interested in what you can bring to a character on such short notice. So when you’re performing your cold read, never panic if you cannot remember all of the lines, simply improvise and go with the flow of the character.

Always remember to bring out the intent, mood, and characterization of the scene through appropriate articulation and body language.

I always recommend that you take classes before going on acting auditions because they will prepare you for performing cold reads.

Anyone born outside of the US has to have a visa to work. There are a few types of visas:

H1

If you are a student, you can have the following visa:

F1

J1

To get a visa, an agency has to sponsor you. The O1 is the better visa to get, but you have to have 25 tear sheets, 5 letters from clients, pending work in the states, and 10 clients in the states that will say that you coming in is worthy and can work.

For the H1 visa, you have to apply for it in April. If approved you can start work October 1st of that same year. No need for the other stuff, the space is limited and works like a lottery.

I believe visas can last for 2-5 years-most commonly 3yrs.

They both cost about $4,000-$5,000 USD.
